Kentucky Principal Certification Practice Test

Teachers of exceptional children are excluded from district alternative preparation programs for middle and high school primarily because there are specific licensure and training requirements mandated for educators who work with students with disabilities. These educators often need specialized skills and knowledge that go beyond the typical content-area focus, such as understanding individual education plans (IEPs), behavioral strategies, and legal frameworks related to special education.

Due to the complexities involved in special education, teachers in this category typically pursue separate preparation pathways or certifications that are designed to equip them with the necessary skills to support diverse learners effectively. Consequently, inclusion in general alternative preparation programs may not adequately address the specific needs of exceptional children, leading to their exclusion from these programs.

In contrast, teachers of mathematics, science, and social studies generally do not have the same level of specialized training requirements, allowing them more flexibility in participating in alternative preparation programs geared towards cognates in the general education system.
